Owens River Headwaters Wilderness

Owens River Headwaters Wilderness is a 14,699-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in California, managed by the Forest Service. This primitive backcountry offers hikers and backpackers a chance to experience non-motorized solitude in a remote setting where roads, motors, and mechanized travel are prohibited.

Visitors should come prepared for true wilderness conditions. All travel is foot-powered, and Leave No Trace principles are essential—pack out everything you pack in, camp only in designated areas where permitted, and respect the landscape's fragile character. Water sources, weather, and terrain vary seasonally, so research current conditions and obtain any required permits before heading out.

Access is typically by foot from trailheads in the surrounding area. Snow and high water can make spring and early summer challenging; fall offers stable conditions and lower crowds. Winter travel is possible for experienced winter-equipped parties but requires advanced planning and avalanche awareness.
