About Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.Wilderness Area

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area spans nearly 350,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in Georgia, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a true wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel allowed. The landscape is a vast swamp ecosystem of cypress forests, open water prairies, and wildlife habitat that defines primitive travel in the Southeast.

Visitors come here to paddle, hike, and backpack through remote terrain where solitude and self-sufficiency are the reality. Canoeing and kayaking are the primary ways to navigate the waterways and reach backcountry campsites. Hiking and backpacking require careful route-finding and excellent map skills, as trails are often unmarked or minimal.

Access is limited and seasonal. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable water levels and least insect pressure, though heat and humidity are intense. Winter and early spring can bring low water or flooding depending on conditions. Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles strictly—pack out everything, use established campsites, and respect the wilderness character. This is not a place for casual day-trippers; plan for multi-day expeditions with proper gear, navigation tools, and wilderness experience.
