About Ojito Wilderness Area

Ojito Wilderness Area is an 11,852-acre federally protected Wilderness in New Mexico managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive backcountry where motorized vehicles, roads, and mechanized travel are prohibited—the fundamental reality of wilderness designation. Visitors come here to hike and backpack in solitude across landscape that rewards self-reliance and Leave No Trace ethics. There are no developed trails or facilities; navigation and route-finding are your responsibility. Access requires planning and awareness that you are entering remote country where you must be entirely self-sufficient.
