Never Summer Wilderness

Never Summer Wilderness encompasses over 20,800 acres of pristine high-country terrain in northern Colorado, straddling the Continental Divide between Grand County and Jackson County. This remote wilderness features dramatic peaks, crystalline alpine lakes, and expansive tundra meadows that showcase the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains. The landscape ranges from dense subalpine forests at lower elevations to exposed alpine ridges above 12,000 feet, offering diverse terrain for backcountry exploration. The wilderness is characterized by deep valleys carved by glaciation, with over 30 named lakes and numerous unnamed tarns providing stunning scenery and fishing opportunities for those willing to venture into this relatively undiscovered corner of Colorado.

Access to Never Summer Wilderness requires commitment and self-sufficiency. Primary trailheads include the Cascade Creek Trail and Cascade Lake trailhead near the western boundary, offering gateway access to the heart of the wilderness. The terrain is steep and demanding in many sections, with elevation gains exceeding 2,000 feet common on approach routes. Weather can change rapidly at these elevations, and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent during summer months. Solitude is nearly guaranteed given the wilderness's remote location and lack of maintained trail infrastructure—many routes require off-trail navigation and route-finding skills.

Backpackers and mountaineers will find exceptional opportunities for wilderness camping, though established campsites are minimal by design. Leave No Trace principles are essential here: pack out all waste, camp at least 100 feet from water sources, and use established campsites where visible. The pristine alpine environment is fragile, and visitor impacts must be carefully managed. Winter access is extremely limited and technical, requiring advanced mountaineering skills and specialized winter gear. Spring and early summer snowmelt can make stream crossings hazardous.
