Muddy Mountains Wilderness Area

Muddy Mountains Wilderness Area encompasses nearly 48,200 acres of federally protected backcountry in Nevada, managed by the National Park Service as a designated Wilderness. The landscape is primitive and rugged, open only to non-motorized travel on foot or horseback—no roads, vehicles, or mechanized equipment are permitted within its boundaries.

This is a place for backpacking, hiking, and seeking solitude in true wilderness conditions. Visitors should expect remote terrain, limited water sources, and the self-reliance that comes with backcountry travel. Access requires planning; trailheads and approach routes vary, so research current conditions and regulations before heading out.

Wilderness rules are strict and enforced. Leave No Trace principles are not optional—they are the standard of use. Camp away from water sources, pack out all waste, stay on or near established routes where they exist, and respect the area's primitive character. Spring and fall offer the most favorable conditions; summer heat and winter cold present real challenges in this exposed terrain.
