Mountain Lake Wilderness

Mountain Lake Wilderness is a 16,585-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry open only to non-motorized, non-mechanized travel—no roads, motors, mountain bikes, or mechanized equipment of any kind are permitted. This is genuine wilderness, meant for hikers and backpackers seeking solitude and a Leave No Trace experience.

The area offers backcountry hiking and backpacking as its primary draws. Visitors should expect rugged, undeveloped terrain with minimal infrastructure and a requirement to be self-sufficient. Access is on foot only, and all travel must follow established foot trails. Camp anywhere within the wilderness boundary according to wilderness regulations, pack out everything you pack in, and respect the primitive character of the place.

Season and access depend on weather and trail conditions. Spring through fall is the practical window for most visitors; winter conditions can make backcountry travel hazardous.
