Mount Riley Wilderness Area

Mount Riley Wilderness Area encompasses 8,383 acres of federally protected backcountry in southwestern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through quiet desert landscape, experiencing genuine solitude far from development. The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, stay on established routes, camp away from water sources, and respect the land's fragile character.

Access requires self-reliance and careful planning. There are no maintained facilities, trailheads, or services within or immediately adjacent to the area. Seasonal water availability is limited and unpredictable, making thorough preparation essential. Spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable conditions for backcountry travel in this region. Summer heat can be intense, and winter brings potential snow and cold at higher elevations. Come prepared for remote, self-sufficient wilderness travel.
