Middle Prong Wilderness

Middle Prong Wilderness is a 7,482-acre federally protected wilderness area in North Carolina managed by the Forest Service. It offers a genuine backcountry experience for hikers and backpackers seeking solitude in a primitive setting where no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted.

The wilderness follows strict Leave No Trace principles—visitors must pack out all waste, camp responsibly, and travel on foot or horseback only. This is working backcountry, not a manicured park. Access typically requires hiking from trailheads outside the wilderness boundary; there are no developed facilities or amenities within. Spring through fall is the primary visiting season, with summer offering the most stable conditions. Winter weather can make travel difficult and potentially hazardous.
