About Little Dry Run Wilderness

Little Dry Run Wilderness is a 2,856-acre federally protected wilderness area in Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized setting where solitude and natural landscape take priority.

As a designated Wilderness Area, Little Dry Run operates under strict rules: no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles and travel on foot or horseback only. Access is limited to foot traffic, which helps preserve the area's backcountry character and keeps human impact minimal.

The best time to visit is during spring through fall, when weather is most favorable for backcountry travel. Winter conditions can make the area challenging to access. Plan for self-sufficient backpacking and come prepared for primitive conditions—there are no facilities, maintained campsites, or services within the wilderness.
