La Madre Mountain Wilderness

La Madre Mountain Wilderness is a 19,048-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Nevada, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized landscape where solitude and self-reliance are core to the experience. All travel must be on foot; no roads, motors, or mechanized equipment are permitted within the boundary. Visitors are expected to follow Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and minimize your footprint on the land.

Access requires a high level of planning and preparation. There are no maintained facilities, services, or developed trailheads; getting to and through the wilderness demands route-finding skills, navigation ability, and physical fitness. Water sources are limited and unreliable, so carrying adequate supply is essential. Spring and early fall typically offer the most favorable conditions, though weather in the high desert can shift rapidly. Winter can bring snow and extreme cold; summer heat is intense. Visit with a firm understanding that this is true wilderness—help is distant, and self-rescue may be necessary.
