Koyukuk Wilderness Area

Koyukuk Wilderness Area spans nearly 380,000 acres of remote backcountry in Alaska, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as federally protected Wilderness. This is primitive country—no roads, no motorized travel, no mechanized equipment. Access is by foot, canoe, or aircraft only, and the landscape demands serious self-reliance and wilderness skill.

The area offers backpacking and hiking for those prepared for Alaska's backcountry reality: river travel, tundra terrain, and variable weather. Solitude is genuine here; you'll encounter few people. Wildlife viewing and photography are natural draws. The season is short and weather unpredictable, even in summer months.

Visiting Koyukuk Wilderness means committing to Leave No Trace principles and Alaska's wilderness rules. There are no maintained trails, no shelters, no resupply. Fly-in access is the norm. Winter is not a casual season here. This is for experienced backcountry travelers only.
