About Kootznoowoo Wilderness

Kootznoowoo Wilderness encompasses over one million acres of remote backcountry in Alaska, managed by the Forest Service as a federally protected Wilderness Area. This is genuinely primitive terrain—no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. Access requires water or air transport, and once you're in, you're on foot or by boat, with solitude as the dominant experience.

Backpacking and hiking are the primary pursuits here, along with kayaking and camping in this vast, roadless landscape. The wilderness demands self-sufficiency: you'll need to navigate rugged terrain, manage weather that can shift rapidly, and practice strict Leave No Trace discipline. There are no maintained trails or developed infrastructure—this is true backcountry.

The Southeast Alaska season runs short. Summer months (June through September) offer the best window for travel, with longer daylight and milder conditions. May and October are accessible but colder and shorter-daylight months. Winter (December through March) presents serious hazards: extreme cold, deep snow, and minimal daylight make travel extremely difficult and dangerous for most visitors. Plan for genuine wilderness conditions and come prepared for isolation.
