Kobuk Valley Wilderness Area

Kobuk Valley Wilderness Area spans nearly 183,000 acres of remote backcountry in Alaska, offering visitors a true arctic wilderness experience far removed from roads and mechanized access. The landscape is primitive and undeveloped, characterized by the kind of isolation and natural conditions that define federally protected Wilderness.

Recreation here centers on backpacking and hiking across roadless terrain, along with camping and wildlife viewing for those prepared for extended backcountry travel. This is a place for solitude and self-reliance; visitors must be equipped for multi-day trips and capable of traveling without trails or developed infrastructure.

As a federally designated Wilderness, the area operates under strict non-motorized, non-mechanized rules. No motors, vehicles, or mountain bikes are permitted; travel is by foot, canoe, or other non-mechanized means. All visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles and be prepared for true wilderness conditions. Access is limited and requires significant planning; there are no roads leading into the area, and reaching it typically involves charter aircraft or water transport from the nearest communities. The short summer season (roughly June through September) is the primary window for visitation, though conditions can be challenging even then.
