James River Face Wilderness

James River Face Wilderness is an 8,849-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Virginia, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape offers primitive backcountry terrain suited to foot travel and overnight trips away from development and motor access.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience this wilderness. The area provides opportunity for solitude and immersion in non-motorized backcountry—the essential character of a federally designated Wilderness. Expect no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel of any kind. This is genuine backcountry, not a maintained recreation area.

Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles and all Wilderness regulations. Plan accordingly: bring what you need, camp responsibly, and pack out everything you pack in. Access and trailheads vary; contact the Forest Service for current conditions, maps, and entry points. Spring through fall generally offers the most reliable visiting conditions, though weather in any season can change quickly in mountain terrain.
