Jacumba Wilderness Area

Jacumba Wilderness Area spans over 33,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive, non-motorized wilderness where hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore the landscape. You'll find solitude and an authentic backcountry experience far from roads and developed infrastructure.

Visiting means accepting wilderness rules: no motorized travel, no mechanized equipment, and no mountain bikes. The wilderness is yours to explore on foot or horseback, but you're expected to follow Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and minimize your footprint. Access is on foot from trailheads; there are no roads or facilities inside the wilderness boundary.

Season your visit for cooler months when the desert heat is manageable. Summer temperatures can be extreme in this region. Water sources are limited in a desert wilderness, so carry sufficient supplies and plan your route carefully. This is a place for experienced backcountry travelers who respect the primitive character and self-sufficiency required.
