Inyo Mountains Wilderness

Inyo Mountains Wilderness is a 74,052-acre federally protected wilderness in California managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry where motorized travel, mechanical equipment, and developed roads do not exist—only foot and stock travel are permitted. The landscape offers solitude and untrammeled terrain for backpacking and hiking, drawing visitors seeking a genuine wilderness experience away from infrastructure.

Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles and understand that wilderness regulations prohibit motors, mountain bikes, and mechanized travel of any kind. Access is by foot or horseback only, and there are no maintained facilities within the wilderness boundary. Plan for self-sufficiency: carry what you need, pack out all waste, and camp responsibly. Spring through fall offers the most favorable conditions for travel, though high elevation and exposure can bring sudden weather shifts. Winter access is possible but requires winter mountaineering skills and preparation.
