Innoko Wilderness Area

Innoko Wilderness Area spans over 1.3 million acres of remote, federally protected backcountry in Alaska. This is genuine wilderness—no roads, no motorized travel, and no mechanized equipment allowed. The landscape is primitive and largely untracked, offering visitors the solitude and isolation that defines wild Alaska.

Recreation here centers on backpacking and hiking for those equipped to travel on foot through unmaintained terrain. There are no established trail systems or developed facilities; you navigate by map and compass through tundra, river valleys, and boreal forest. Fishing and wildlife viewing are possible, though the wilderness demands serious preparation and self-sufficiency.

Access is challenging and typically requires charter floatplane or riverboat from nearby communities. The brief summer season—roughly June through September—is the only practical window for travel. Winter conditions are extreme. This is backcountry reserved for experienced wilderness travelers who understand Leave No Trace principles and are prepared for isolation, weather, and the reality of traveling without trails or support infrastructure.
