Imperial Refuge Wilderness Area

Imperial Refuge Wilderness Area is a 15,743-acre federally protected Wilderness in Arizona, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This is primitive backcountry where motors, mechanized travel, and roads are prohibited—a place designed for foot traffic and self-reliance. Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore the landscape, offering visitors genuine solitude in a non-motorized setting. The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles; what you pack in, you pack out, and the landscape is left as you found it.

Access is on foot only. There are no developed facilities or maintained trail infrastructure within the boundaries. Seasonal considerations matter: Arizona desert conditions are extreme in summer heat and winter cold. Spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable hiking windows, though conditions vary by elevation and exposure. Plan accordingly, carry sufficient water, and understand that you are entering remote country where self-sufficiency is essential.
