Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness

Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness is a federally protected, 8,471-acre Wilderness Area in Virginia managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry where roads, motors, and mechanized travel are prohibited—a landscape designed for quiet, non-motorized exploration.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the area. Visitors come for backcountry solitude and to travel through undeveloped forest terrain on foot. The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp away from water sources, and travel without equipment or infrastructure beyond what you can carry.

Access is by foot only. Winter weather can make travel difficult, while late spring through early fall offers the most reliable conditions for hiking and overnight trips. Plan accordingly for Virginia's seasonal climate and come prepared for self-sufficient travel in a place where facilities, marked trails, and maintained infrastructure do not exist.
