About High Rock Canyon Wilderness Area

High Rock Canyon Wilderness Area spans nearly 47,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in northern Nevada, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is true wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here for hiking and backpacking in a remote, non-motorized landscape where solitude and self-reliance are the norm.

The wilderness demands respect for Leave No Trace principles and a genuine commitment to primitive travel. Access is on foot only, and the terrain is unimproved. Spring and early fall offer the most comfortable conditions; winter brings significant hazards and closure risk. Summer can be hot and dry. Come prepared for backcountry self-sufficiency, with map, compass, water planning, and experience in off-trail navigation.
