Headwaters Wilderness

Headwaters Wilderness is a 22,080-acre federally protected wilderness area in Wisconsin, managed by the Forest Service. It preserves a primitive backcountry landscape where motorized travel, mechanical equipment, and developed infrastructure are prohibited. The wilderness offers solitude and non-motorized recreation in an undeveloped forest setting.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience this area. Because it is a designated Wilderness, all travel must be on foot or by other non-motorized means. Visitors should expect a genuine backcountry experience with minimal trail infrastructure and no established amenities. The area is managed under strict Wilderness regulations: Leave No Trace principles are essential, and you must pack out everything you pack in.

Access is seasonal and weather-dependent. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable conditions for backcountry travel. Winter conditions can be severe and challenging. Plan ahead, obtain necessary permits or information from the Forest Service, and come prepared for self-sufficient travel in a true roadless wilderness.
