Harquahala Mountains Wilderness Area

Harquahala Mountains Wilderness Area spans nearly 23,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in Arizona, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is true wilderness—no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel of any kind. What you'll find is primitive desert landscape suited to hiking and backpacking in a remote, non-motorized setting where solitude is the main draw.

Visitors must travel on foot and follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, camp away from water sources, and respect the wilderness character that makes the place worth protecting. Access is limited to foot traffic, so plan accordingly. The desert environment demands water planning and heat awareness, especially in summer months. Winter is the most comfortable season for backcountry travel here.
