About Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area

Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area is a 19-acre federally designated Wilderness on an island in Wisconsin. This small, primitive backcountry area is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and offers visitors a chance to experience undeveloped natural habitat far from roads, motors, and mechanized travel.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore this remote island wilderness. The area is open to non-motorized recreation only—no vehicles, motors, or mountain bikes are permitted. Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp on durable surfaces, and respect wildlife. Access requires water travel, and the small size means solitude and intimate contact with the landscape are central to the experience here.

Best visiting occurs during the warmer months when water conditions are most favorable for reaching the island. Spring and fall are accessible but may present rougher water crossings. Winter access is severely limited by ice and cold. Plan ahead, check with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for current conditions and any access restrictions, and come prepared for true wilderness—minimal facilities and complete self-sufficiency are the reality.
