About Goat Rocks Wilderness

Goat Rocks Wilderness is a 108,196-acre federally protected wilderness area in Washington, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is rugged backcountry terrain shaped for non-motorized travel and primitive recreation. Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience this wilderness; trails wind through alpine and subalpine country where solitude and self-reliance define the visit.

As a designated Wilderness Area, Goat Rocks operates under strict rules: no roads, motors, or mechanized travel of any kind. Mountain bikes, vehicles, and all forms of mechanical transport are prohibited. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and move through the landscape with minimal impact. This is untrammeled country where your footprint is the only trace of passage.

Access is seasonal. Snow closes high-elevation routes in winter and early spring; late spring through early fall (roughly May through October) is the practical window, with summer months offering the most stable conditions. Plan for variable weather, carry a map and compass or GPS, and come prepared for genuine backcountry travel. This is not a day-hike destination for casual visitors—it rewards experienced hikers and backpackers who respect wilderness rules and come ready for self-sufficiency.
