About Gates of the Arctic Wilderness Area

Gates of the Arctic Wilderness Area spans more than 7.2 million acres across Alaska as one of the nation's largest federally protected Wilderness zones. The landscape is remote Arctic backcountry, managed by the National Park Service under strict wilderness designation. It is primitive country where motorized travel, mechanized transport, and roads are prohibited—visitors move on foot, by canoe, or by aircraft drop-off only.

Backpacking and hiking are the primary pursuits here, along with camping in designated wilderness style. The isolation and scale attract those seeking genuine solitude and self-reliance in untracked terrain. Wildlife viewing and photography are natural complements to backcountry travel. Access is limited and typically requires bush plane charter or considerable overland approach from nearby communities.

Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles strictly. There are no maintained trails, marked campsites, or facilities; success depends on navigation skill, physical conditioning, and bear awareness. The Alaska interior's brief summer window—roughly June through September—offers the most practical travel window, though weather can shift rapidly at any time. Winter travel is possible for those with advanced cold-weather and wilderness skills, but daylight is minimal and conditions severe.
