Fortification Range Wilderness Area

Fortification Range Wilderness Area spans nearly 31,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in Nevada, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is genuine wilderness—no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel of any kind. It's a landscape built for self-powered recreation: hiking, backpacking, and the kind of solitude that comes only when you're on foot, moving at human pace through remote country.

Visitors should expect primitive conditions throughout. There are no maintained facilities, no developed trailheads with parking lots, and resupply is not an option once you're in. Leave No Trace principles aren't suggestions here—they're the only way the place stays wild. Pack out everything you pack in, camp away from water sources, and travel light. Access typically requires a high-clearance vehicle to reach staging areas on BLM land outside the wilderness boundary; from there, all travel is by foot or horseback.

Season matters. Late spring through early fall (May through October) is generally passable, with summer months (June through September) offering the most reliable conditions. Winter brings snow and extreme cold that closes the high country. Before heading out, contact the local BLM field office for current conditions, water availability, and any temporary closures. This is not a place to wing it.
