Flat Tops Wilderness

The Flat Tops Wilderness encompasses over 231,000 acres of remote high-country terrain in northwestern Colorado, featuring expansive plateaus interspersed with deep canyons, alpine lakes, and pristine backcountry. The landscape is characterized by its distinctive flat-topped mountains rising above 11,000 feet, offering vast open vistas across rolling tundra mixed with conifer forests. This sprawling wilderness provides exceptional solitude and primitive recreation opportunities, with numerous backcountry lakes offering excellent fishing for cutthroat and brook trout. The area's vast size and relatively gentle topography on the plateaus make it accessible to backpackers of varying experience levels, though travel requires self-reliance and careful route-finding as trails can be faint or unmarked in many sections.
