El Paso Mountains Wilderness Area

The El Paso Mountains Wilderness Area encompasses nearly 24,400 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is true wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through remote terrain, seeking the solitude and self-reliance that primitive backcountry offers.

Access requires foot travel only. All users must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and respect the wilderness character that the federal designation exists to preserve. Seasonal conditions vary significantly; spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable hiking weather, while winter can bring hazardous conditions and summer heat can be extreme in this region.
