East Potrillo Mountains Wilderness Area

The East Potrillo Mountains Wilderness Area encompasses 13,333 acres of federally protected backcountry in New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive wilderness where motorized travel, mechanized transport, and roads are prohibited—visitors must travel on foot or by horse, and the landscape remains undeveloped and remote.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore the area. The terrain offers solitude and a true wilderness experience for those willing to navigate without developed trails or infrastructure. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, camp away from water sources, use established fire rings or camp stoves only, and respect the fragile desert ecosystem.

Access is limited by the wilderness designation itself; there are no motorized approaches or established trailheads with services. Spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable conditions for backcountry travel in this region. Winter and early summer can present challenges depending on elevation and water availability. Come prepared with adequate water, navigation skills, and knowledge of wilderness travel—this is unforgiving country meant for experienced backcountry users.
