Dome Wilderness

Dome Wilderness is a 5,178-acre federally protected wilderness area in New Mexico, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized setting where solitude and Leave No Trace principles define the experience. No roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted—visitors must travel on foot, and the landscape rewards those seeking quiet backcountry time away from developed infrastructure.

Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and entering on foot. Spring through fall are the most practical seasons for visiting. Winter conditions and snow can make travel difficult. Plan for self-sufficiency: bring water, navigation tools, and supplies. Respect wilderness rules by packing out all waste, camping responsibly, and minimizing your footprint. This is untracked, undeveloped country—prepare accordingly.
