Dolly Sods Wilderness

Dolly Sods Wilderness is a 17,776-acre federally protected wilderness area in West Virginia managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is rugged backcountry characterized by high plateau terrain, rocky outcrops, and dense vegetation. It offers a genuine remote experience in a primitive, non-motorized setting where hikers and backpackers can find solitude far from roads and developed infrastructure.

Recreation here centers on hiking and backpacking through unmarked or lightly-marked terrain. There are no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel of any kind permitted—the wilderness is managed to preserve its primitive character. Visitors should expect to navigate deliberately challenging country and be self-sufficient with navigation, water, and shelter.
