Desolation Wilderness

Desolation Wilderness is a 64,045-acre federally protected wilderness area in California managed by the Forest Service. It offers visitors a genuine backcountry experience in a primitive landscape where motorized travel, mechanized equipment, and roads are prohibited. Backpacking and hiking are the primary ways to explore this nonmotorized terrain, where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

Visitors must follow strict wilderness rules and Leave No Trace principles. All travel is foot-based; pack animals are not permitted in federally designated wilderness. Water must be treated, campsites are dispersed, and fires may be restricted or prohibited depending on conditions. The wilderness is typically accessible during warmer months, with heavy snow blocking access in winter. A permit system often governs entry to manage impact and preserve the area's primitive character.
