About Death Valley Wilderness Area

Death Valley Wilderness Area spans over 3.19 million acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the National Park Service as a designated Wilderness. This is primitive terrain where motorized travel, mechanized transport, and roads are prohibited—visitors must travel on foot or horseback only. The landscape ranges from below-sea-level basins to high desert ridges, offering solitude and untracked terrain for experienced backcountry travelers.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary activities here. Routes are unmarked and navigation demands map and compass skills; there are no developed trails or facilities. Water is scarce and often unreliable, requiring careful planning and self-sufficiency. Visitors must adhere strictly to Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp away from water sources, and minimize impact on the fragile desert ecosystem.

Access requires a permit and typically entry through Death Valley National Park. The best visiting window is fall through spring, when temperatures are moderate; summer heat is extreme and dangerous. Winter can bring cold nights and occasional snow at higher elevations. This wilderness is suited only to experienced backcountry travelers prepared for self-rescue, navigation without trails, and the harsh realities of remote desert travel.
