About Cloud Peak Wilderness

Cloud Peak Wilderness spans nearly 192,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in Wyoming, designated to preserve its primitive character and non-motorized experience. This is genuine wilderness—no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel of any kind. What you'll find is remote alpine terrain and solitude, accessible only on foot or horseback, where the landscape remains largely as it was before modern development.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the area. Visitors come for multi-day trips into the high country, where self-sufficiency and careful planning are essential. The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, camp below treeline where required, treat water, and minimize your footprint entirely. Access is limited to trailheads at the wilderness boundary; there are no facilities or services within the protected area itself.

Season matters significantly. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable conditions for travel and camping. Snow and severe weather close access during winter months, and spring conditions can be unpredictable. Come prepared for backcountry conditions—weather can change rapidly, and help is far away. This wilderness rewards those who respect its remoteness and rules, and demands the self-reliance that true wilderness travel requires.
