Cleghorn Lakes Wilderness Area

Cleghorn Lakes Wilderness Area spans nearly 40,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The area offers primitive hiking and backpacking in a non-motorized setting where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience. No roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted; visitors must travel on foot or horseback and practice Leave No Trace principles throughout their stay.

Access is by foot from trailheads outside the wilderness boundary. The landscape and climate vary with elevation and season, so plan accordingly and check conditions before heading out. Spring and early summer bring water availability but potentially difficult snow; fall offers stable conditions and reliable access. Winter travel is possible but demands experience with snow and cold-weather travel. Carry a map, compass or GPS device, and sufficient water and supplies—this is genuine backcountry where self-sufficiency is essential.
