Cinder Cone Wilderness Area

Cinder Cone Wilderness Area spans 18,329 acres in southwestern New Mexico and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management as federally protected wilderness. The landscape is primitive and remote, offering visitors the solitude and rugged character of true backcountry where no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted.

The area is best suited for hiking and backpacking, with travel restricted to foot traffic only. Like all federal wilderness, it operates under strict Leave No Trace principles—visitors must pack out what they pack in, camp responsibly, and avoid permanent impacts to the landscape. Access is limited to non-motorized entry points, and conditions vary seasonally. The wilderness demands self-sufficiency and wilderness skills; there are no developed facilities or maintained infrastructure.
