About Chupadera Wilderness Area

Chupadera Wilderness Area is a 5,443-acre federally protected wilderness in New Mexico managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The area offers primitive backcountry experience in a non-motorized setting where solitude and self-reliance are central to a visit.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore the wilderness. There are no roads, motors, or mechanized travel allowed—the landscape remains roadless and undeveloped, accessible only on foot. Visitors should expect a genuine backcountry experience with minimal infrastructure and the need for solid navigation and wilderness skills.

As a federally designated Wilderness Area, Leave No Trace principles are not optional—they are the legal and ethical standard. Pack out all waste, camp only in designated areas where permitted, and travel lightly across the land. Access points and trailheads exist, but detailed route information should be confirmed with the managing Fish and Wildlife Service office before you go. Spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable conditions for wilderness travel in New Mexico's high-desert environment.
