About Chanchelulla Wilderness

Chanchelulla Wilderness is an 8,022-acre federally protected wilderness area in California, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive setting where solitude and untracked terrain are the main draws. Like all designated wilderness, mechanized travel, motors, and mountain bikes are prohibited—foot travel and stock use only.

Visitors should come prepared for non-motorized backcountry travel and be ready to practice Leave No Trace principles. There are no maintained facilities or developed access points; this is genuine wilderness where self-sufficiency and route-finding skills matter. Water sources, weather, and seasonal snow will shape your planning and timing.
