Chama River Canyon Wilderness

Chama River Canyon Wilderness spans nearly 47,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in northern New Mexico, managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. The landscape is characterized by canyon terrain carved by the Chama River, offering hikers and backpackers a remote setting where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

Visitors to the wilderness must follow Leave No Trace principles and be prepared for non-motorized travel only. Access requires hiking from trailheads outside the wilderness boundary; there are no facilities or services within. Spring through early fall offers the most reliable conditions, though weather in the high country can change rapidly.
