Cerro del Yuta Wilderness Area

Cerro del Yuta Wilderness Area spans 13,433 acres of federally protected backcountry in northern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. As a designated Wilderness Area, it offers visitors genuine primitive conditions—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. The landscape is backcountry terrain suited to foot traffic and quiet exploration.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the area. The Wilderness designation means you'll find solitude and an undeveloped landscape, but also the responsibility that comes with it. No maintained trail network, infrastructure, or services exist here; visitors must be self-sufficient and navigate accordingly.

Wilderness rules are strict and non-negotiable: travel on foot only, pack out everything you pack in, and follow Leave No Trace principles. Access points and seasonal conditions vary, so planning ahead and checking current conditions with the BLM office is essential before heading out. Spring and fall typically offer the most stable weather, though winter can bring snow and difficult conditions at this elevation.
