Castle Crags Wilderness

Castle Crags Wilderness is an 11,079-acre federally protected wilderness area in California managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry with no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel—this is true wilderness where you move on foot or horseback only.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the area. The terrain and isolation make it ideal for those seeking solitude and a genuine backcountry experience away from developed infrastructure. Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and traveling by trail.

Visitors must follow strict wilderness rules: no motors, no mountain bikes, no mechanized equipment. Leave No Trace principles are essential—pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly, and treat this protected landscape with the care it demands. The season for safe travel is typically late spring through early fall, when snow clears and weather permits backcountry access. Winter conditions can make routes impassable.
