Capitan Mountains Wilderness

Capitan Mountains Wilderness is a 36,074-acre federally protected backcountry area in New Mexico managed by the Forest Service. The landscape offers primitive hiking and backpacking opportunities for those seeking solitude and non-motorized exploration in an undeveloped setting.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the terrain is closed to roads, motors, and mechanized travel. Visitors must travel on foot or horseback and follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the landscape. Access is foot-traffic only, and the wilderness character means minimal infrastructure or maintained facilities. Plan accordingly with self-sufficiency in mind—this is true backcountry, not a developed recreation area.
