Broad Canyon Wilderness Area

Broad Canyon Wilderness Area spans nearly 16,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in southwestern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. As a designated Wilderness Area, it is roadless and open only to non-motorized, non-mechanized travel—hiking and backpacking on foot are the primary ways to explore it.

The area offers genuine solitude and primitive backcountry experience for those seeking to leave the developed world behind. Visitors should come prepared for self-reliant travel with map and compass; facilities and maintained trails are not features of wilderness management. All travel must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and travel quietly to preserve the wild character of the place.

Access and seasonality depend on local trailheads and weather; contact the BLM office managing the area for current conditions, water availability, and entry points. High desert conditions mean that spring and fall offer moderate temperatures, while summer heat and winter cold present real challenges. No motorized or mountain-bike travel is permitted—this is true wilderness, not backcountry recreation with infrastructure.
