Bristol Mountains Wilderness Area

Bristol Mountains Wilderness Area protects over 77,000 acres of remote, undeveloped backcountry in California's high desert. The area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a federally designated Wilderness, meaning it remains free from roads, motorized vehicles, and mechanized travel of any kind. Visitors come here to experience genuine solitude and self-reliant backcountry travel across a primitive landscape.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore this Wilderness. There are no maintained trails, developed campsites, or services—you navigate cross-country and camp where permitted under Leave No Trace principles. Water is scarce in the high desert environment, so careful planning and route-finding are essential. Expect rugged terrain, minimal shade, and the need for solid backcountry skills and self-sufficiency.

Access requires a high-clearance vehicle to reach trailheads, and seasonal conditions dictate when travel is feasible. Spring and fall offer the most forgiving temperatures, though summer is possible with early starts and water discipline. Winter conditions can render the area inaccessible. Permits are not required, but all visitors must follow federal Wilderness regulations: camp below treeline where trees exist, pack out all waste, and travel on foot or horseback only.
