About Bright Star Wilderness Area

Bright Star Wilderness Area encompasses 8,761 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. As a designated Wilderness Area, it is reserved for non-motorized, primitive recreation—roads, motors, and mechanized travel are prohibited throughout.

The area is suited primarily for hiking and backpacking, offering visitors a chance to experience undeveloped landscape on foot. Backcountry camping is permitted, though visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp away from water sources, use established sites where possible, and leave the landscape as you found it.

Access to the wilderness requires no permits, but planning is essential. Water sources, trail conditions, and seasonal accessibility vary; contact the BLM before your trip to understand current conditions and plan your route. Winter conditions may limit access, and spring and fall typically offer the most stable visiting windows. Come prepared for self-sufficiency—this is remote country with no services or maintained infrastructure.
