About Bridger Wilderness

Bridger Wilderness spans over 426,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in Wyoming, managed by the Forest Service as a primitive non-motorized landscape. The terrain offers high-elevation alpine and subalpine country with glacial lakes, meadows, and rugged peaks—terrain shaped for foot travel and self-reliance. This is genuine wilderness: no roads penetrate it, no motors are allowed, and mechanized travel of any kind is prohibited. Visitors come to hike, backpack, and experience solitude in a landscape where your own legs and pack are the only means of travel.

Access requires a trailhead approach from surrounding national forest lands. The wilderness season runs roughly May through October, depending on snow melt and weather; summer months offer the most reliable conditions and longest daylight. Plan for backcountry self-sufficiency: carry water treatment, camp away from water sources, pack out all waste, and follow Leave No Trace principles throughout. Permits may be required—check with the managing Forest Service office before you go. Early fall can offer excellent conditions with fewer visitors, though weather turns quickly at elevation.
