Black Mountain Wilderness Area

Black Mountain Wilderness Area spans nearly 21,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through undeveloped terrain, seeking the solitude and self-reliance that true wilderness offers.

Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and traveling on foot. The landscape and seasonal conditions vary with elevation and local weather; plan accordingly for desert or high-desert conditions typical of this region of California. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp below ridges, use established sites where they exist, and avoid concentrating impact in any one area. This is a place for experienced backcountry users comfortable navigating without maintained trails and managing their own safety in remote terrain.
