Birch Is Wilderness Area

Birch Island Wilderness Area is a 7-acre federally protected Wilderness in Maine, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This small, primitive backcountry preserve is closed to motorized and mechanized travel, preserving its non-motorized character for foot traffic only.

Visitors come here for hiking and solitude in an undeveloped landscape. Like all designated Wilderness, it operates under strict Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp only where permitted, and respect the absence of maintained infrastructure. There are no roads, no motors, and no mountain bikes or other mechanized access.

Access and logistics are limited by the site's small size and remote location in downeast Maine. Plan to visit during the warmer months when weather and ground conditions allow foot travel. Winter conditions can be severe and render the area difficult or impassable. Always check current conditions with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before your trip.
