Bighorn Mountain Wilderness

Bighorn Mountain Wilderness is a 12,056-acre federally protected wilderness area in California, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized setting where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the landscape is roadless and undeveloped. No motors, mechanized travel, or mountain bikes are permitted—only foot traffic and pack stock on established routes. Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp away from water sources, and travel lightly on the land.

Access is by foot from trailheads on the periphery; plan accordingly and bring all supplies you'll need. Seasons vary by elevation and weather; spring and fall offer moderate conditions, while winter snow and summer heat can limit comfortable travel windows. Check with the Forest Service for current conditions, water availability, and any seasonal closures before you go.
