Big Slough Wilderness

Big Slough Wilderness is a 3,521-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in East Texas, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape here is low, forested bottomland—typical of the region's creek drainages and swamp margins. It's a place for quiet backcountry experience: hiking and backpacking through primitive terrain without the sound or sight of motors or maintained trails.

As a designated Wilderness, the area operates under strict rules. No roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted; you move on foot or horseback only. Mountain bikes are prohibited. The expectation is Leave No Trace—pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly, and leave the land undisturbed. Access is typically from trailheads managed by the Forest Service; check current conditions and permits before you go, as wilderness regulations can shift and water levels in this lowland terrain fluctuate seasonally.
